Earth Day is an annual event where we celebrate this place we call home. On this day, April 22nd, people around the world come together to promote and take action toward creating a healthier and more sustainable planet. It’s a day of hope, but also a day of reflection.
Decisions are everywhere. From the food that you eat, the way that you dress, your music playlist, or even the content that you share, we are bombarded with decisions every day of our lives. Most of these decisions are made subconsciously without having to think about them too much. One thing about these decisions though is that they all have outcomes or consequences, whether immediate or prolonged.
Not properly disposing of a piece of single-use plastic, like throwing a bottle on the ground, might seem insignificant at that moment in time. The harsh reality is that this bottle will probably outlive you and the next generation. If you however decide to recycle this bottle, you’ve potentially removed it from ending up on a pristine landscape or sinking to the bottom of the ocean. So instead of littering, recycle your single-use plastic items and be an advocate for reusable plastics. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Sustainable plastic management is however not the be-all and end-all for Earth Day initiatives. You can also be part of this positive movement by making smarter decisions when it comes to your energy consumption. Simple actions such as turning off the lights when leaving a room and unplugging electronics that are not in use, do really make a difference.
When it comes to transport, you can decide to use alternatives when possible, like carpooling, walking, or cycling, to reduce your carbon footprint. Changes in your diet also go a long way to promoting sustainable agriculture. Some food for thought is to rethink your diet. By deciding to eat more plant-based meals and reducing our meat intake, we are actively reducing our contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.
A message from our CTO, Ryan Trollip:
We have finite resources available and need to use them wisely and sustainably.
The world makes trillions of decisions every day! Helping organizations reduce waste by making smarter more efficient decisions, is our passion.
In conclusion, being more mindful of the decision we make is most definitely one of the best ways to contribute to the restoration of our planet. The theme for Earth Day 2023 is “Invest in Our Planet”. So invest by making better decisions. Invest in decisions that not only benefit this generation but also those to come. YOU have the power to decide.
